High Contrast

In photography and cinematography “contrast” refers to the difference in brightness between lit and shady areas of an image. In this respect, an image in high contrast has a high amount of alternating deep dark shadows and very brightly lit areas giving a rather uneasy or harsh impression.
See also chiaroscuro. Opposite of low contrast. A lighting style that is marked by high-contrast lighting is called low-key lighting.
