Arri M Series HMI Par Light
The Arri M Series is a highly regarded line of daylight-balanced HMI lights. These fixtures are famous for their innovative “lensless” design. The “M” in the name stands for MAX Technology. This patented Arri reflector design combines the best qualities of a traditional PAR and a Fresnel light. This innovation makes the M-Series a powerful, efficient, and versatile tool for cinematographers and gaffers.
The Innovation: MAX Technology Reflector
A traditional HMI PAR light requires a set of heavy, fragile glass lenses. A gaffer must physically swap these lenses to change the beam from a narrow spot to a wide flood. The Arri M Series completely eliminates this need.
The M-Series uses a unique, dimpled, faceted parabolic reflector. This advanced reflector is the core of the MAX Technology. A filmmaker can change the beam size by simply turning a knob. This knob moves the HMI lamp forward and backward within the reflector. This action adjusts the beam from a tight spot to a wide flood. This gives the M-Series the intense “punch” of a PAR. It also provides the easy focusability of a classic Fresnel.
Light Quality and Characteristics
M-Series lights are high-output HMIs. They produce a very bright, punchy, daylight-balanced light (around 5600K). They are far more efficient than older PAR or Fresnel models. This means they produce more light output for the amount of power they draw.
The light source is a hard light. However, the faceted reflector creates a unique shadow quality. The shadows are crisp, but not razor-sharp like a traditional, lensed HMI. This hybrid shadow quality is very useful. It is less harsh and often more pleasing on its own.
Common On-Set Applications
The M-Series’s combination of high output and focus control makes it a set workhorse. Its intense “punch” is perfect for use with modifiers.
| Bouncing Light | Gaffers frequently use M-Series lights to bounce off a surface. This can be a white ceiling, a wall, or a large bounce card. This technique creates a very large, soft, ambient light source for a scene. |
| Pushing Through Diffusion | It is the perfect light to project through a large diffusion frame. A gaffer might aim an M-Series head, like an M18 or M40, through a 12×12 silk or grid cloth. This creates a massive, soft key light or fill light. |
| Creating Backgrounds | The light can create “hot spots” in the background of a shot. A filmmaker can use it to simulate bright sunlight “blowing out” a window. This adds a strong sense of realism and depth to a scene. |
| Ambient Room Tone | The M-Series is also amazing for quickly establishing a base level of light. A gaffer can aim the light (in its flood setting) at the ceiling. This “ceiling bounce” fills the entire room with a soft, natural-feeling ambient light, often called “room tone” or “atmos.” |
