Lydia Hurlbut profile

Hurlbut Visuals is excited to introduce the Hurlbut Visuals Blog Interview Series.  We are all familiar with the gear.  Hurlbut Visuals would like to help you get to know an interesting part of the story behind the companies that provide the gear.

Hurlbut Visuals recently had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Winfred Scherle, Vice President and General Manager at Carl Zeiss AG Camera Lens Division. Dr. Scherle shares the fascinating history of the company and discusses the future direction of Zeiss lenses.

Enjoy.

Love the interview. Insightful and impassioned. I hope to see more industry interviews that delve into the background of innovation, invention, and the leaders who are reshaping our evolving media landscape. It would be nice to see a flurry of interview videos coming out of Cine Gear Expo.

    Lydia,
Maybe someone over there knows the answer to this question: does Zeiss have any plans to make EOS mount still lenses with a manual aperture ring?
    Thanks,
    John

      John,
I will forward your excellent question to Rich Schleuning at Zeiss to help with an accurate answer.

      John,
I heard back from Rich Schleuning at Zeiss and here is his response, “We do not plan to offer EF mount SLR lenses with a manual aperture. For photographers and filmmakers who want manual aperture control, they can use our ZF.2 lenses with a 3rd party Nikon-to-Canon lens adapter. “

Thank you for getting this together and sharing it. It’s nice that’s it’s not a pitch, just a guy who knows his stuff telling us a little about himself and the company he works for. Very gentle tone to it, interesting to hear him talk his stuff. Thanks.

Very nice! I’m curious if this was shot 1080 put to a 720 timeline or did you stack to 5D’s on top of each other? And of course you used a Zeiss lens didn’t you!?

      Victor,
It was so much fun with our amazing team, director Julien and operator Jose from HV rentals. Dr. Scherle is wise and thoughtful. Zeiss is lucky to have him.

I totally recognize Dr Scherle from NAB, I just didn’t realize who I was talking to. I was asking him some tough questions about the future of Zeiss glass and upcoming products, and he tackled all of them in his wise, patient way. Great stuff, I’m jealous of how much he loves his job and company. He’s obviously happy!

Thanks for doing this, Lydia. The one on Kino Flo is even better. I love how it makes me feel connected to the people behind the industry, helping one see it not just as a business, but a community.

      Paul,

You are so welcome and we are glad you enjoyed it. I completely agree about the community. It is so important to know the people in a corporation making the decisions to personalize it. Stay tuned for Adobe next.
