Smart Business for Cinema Podcast
By Lydia Hurlbut
We first envisioned Hurlbut Visuals when I went to visit Shane shooting Act of Valor in Puerto Rico. What began as a way to showcase his pioneering ability with the Canon 5D Mark II camera expanded to include the hurlblog, the HDSLR rentals division, an educational bootcamp, and a production arm devoted to fund and produce independent projects. In today’s competitive marketplace, we have been challenged to create business solutions that speak to both independent companies and large corporations. Visual storytelling combined with the practical knowledge and teaching gift of Shane and the Elite Team has provided the solution.
As CEO and co-founder of Hurlbut Visuals, I joined Carl Olson, Chris Fenwick and Mitch Aunger on the Digital Convergence Podcast. We had a wonderful conversation about business, marketing, branding, education and building a team in the world of filmmaking.

Lydia, I read every post you guys put up every week. I’ve been following faithfully since last year when I spent time interning with you guys. Each post adds to my understanding and answers questions I have had in regards to cinematography.
But, This opens the blog up into a whole new dimension past cinema and into something all of us independents need to understand. I personally hope your experience in the last few years becomes a regular subject on the blog, I can see by your reading that you’ve been learning a ton and it would be a huge resource. Either way, I’m excited to get into some of the books you put up that I haven’t read yet. Thanks for all you do.
Brian,
Thank-you so much for your kind words, loyalty and passion! I am thrilled to hear the feedback and if you have any suggestions regarding posts, please send them to our
Blog point person Angie email: angie@hurlbutvisuals who is compiling a list for us to write about.
I will be writing more this year about business and branding because all filmmakers are entrepreneurs. I enjoy writing and I can now combine my passion for business and storytelling with a group that I deeply admire: filmmakers.
Thanks for posting. I’ll be listening to the podcast soon.
Do you have any advice for spouses in business together? From what I’ve seen of Shane (Masters in Motion, etc.) he seems like a very high energy guy. Do you have to match that energy?
This is a growing edge in my 28 year relationship with my wife. We get along in most ever respect … almost no friction. But when we do a project together (we occasionally present marriage enrichment workshops as part of the Texas branch of BetterMarrages.com) we don’t always find it quite as smooth. We each have quite different approaches to getting things done.
Thanks again,
Rob:-]
Rob,
Spouses in business together from what I have seen can be hugely successful or a complete nightmare. I think it boils down to communication and clarity. Each person needs to have a defined role of responsibility and trusted to do the job in his or her unique way based on their talents and abilities.
Shane and I have been happily married for 25 years and this is the first time we have worked together! I think what makes it smooth is that we each have our own areas of expertise.
I would never tell Shane how to light and he would not comment about branding, for example. Many times we employ different approaches with implementation, but with a unified goal.
In terms of energy, I think different energy levels resonate very well. I don’t even try to match Shane’s because I can’t! I admire his level of energy. Mine is not as intense.
I view different energies as a complement to one another.
Lydia (and Shane), thanks so much for posting these books. The Energy of Money is totally amazing. It really speaks to the underlying dynamics of $$$ in our world and our personal lives. It’s funny, the book Your Money Or Your Life tried to do that but not as well as Nemeth.
You are welcome. I had the honor of meeting Maria Nemeth and she is extraordinary in person. So wise and radiant. She has overcome a lot in her life and I think that comes across in her books.
