Watch the Official Sony BURANO Demo

The Official Sony BURANO Demo delivered an in-depth view into Sony’s all-new camera system, showing it alongside the VENICE 2 and F55. Originally streamed on Valentine’s Day, we at Filmmakers Academy decided to indulge in our love affair with camera technology.

Broadcast from Sony Studios in sunny California, Shane Hurlbut, ASC took the BURANO through the paces. Joining him was Katie Eleneke (cinematographer), Derek Johnson (DIT/colorist), and Jason Robbins (camera operator/gimbal specialist). (Also, a special shout out to our amazing sound mixer Thomas Popp!)

While there’s always more to unpack and explore, the filmmakers covered considerable ground throughout the two-and-a-half-hour livestream. Due to time constraints, we unfortunately cut the handheld stabilization and built-in ND filters from the schedule. All the same, the demo is chock-full of valuable information about the BURANO.

Key Overview of the BURANO Demo:

After reviewing tech specs with Katie Eleneke, Shane pushed the BURANO to its limits. Comparing it to the VENICE 2 and F55, they took them 9 stops over while Derek Johnson corrected the image. That way, they were able to showcase its breaking point.

After that, Jason Robbins mounted the BURANO to the DJI Ronin 2 to test its performance in action.

Lastly, they tested the BURANO’s AF function and demonstrated how it racked focus with Touch Tracking and AI Subject Recognition.

Designed for highly mobile cine-style shooting, the Sony BURANO is an ideal solution for filmmakers, particularly solo operators and small film crews. We love how its sensor matches the color science of the VENICE 2 but is packaged in a compact and lightweight body. This makes it more manageable with less maintenance.
